What is Restorative Yoga?

Yoga Teacher Training in the Finger Lakes

Restorative Yoga…

Over 2 Hours Restorative Yoga and Meditation

It’s about floating the body…..It’s about undoing…….it’s about resting into clarity…….. It’s whatever you need it to be.

Unlike Yin – in Restorative Yoga – Props REMOVE  the stretch

A certified restorative yoga teacher uses the props to remove the stretch. Why? So it turns down (or off) the sympathetic nervous system – the home of worry and fear.

Whenever the body is in a state of stretch, it conveys to the brain it’s time to “react”. We also work with certain receptors in the body to be sure they are positioned “just so”, which also relaxes the body.

If we can “shed” the body, we can then work with our other layers (the energy, mental, witness and bliss body). Your teacher will offer words to guide you (hopefully) to the bliss body.

Other elements of calm…..

Once the body is in it’s most relaxed position, your teacher will  offer assists. These assists are much the same in a regular yoga class; nurturing and grounding touch. Additional elements to calm and soothe are:

  • Aromatherapy
  • Affirmations
  • Various other techniques & approaches we will leave as a surprise
The past several months, Jennifer has been joining the session and offering Reiki. You are more than welcome to just receive the restorative (you let us know when you sign up). Pricing has been at a discount for “all the bells and whistles” at $48. You will be able to pick and choose in the future (after the June 14th session). We are still playing with the ideas!! Be sure to read each one posted monthly to see what it includes and/or the choices you have.
Speaking of signing up – it is very, very rare that these sessions do not fill up. We offer them monthly (usually a Friday or Sunday) and only accept between 6-8 students.

Sandy Hicks Yoga and Meditation Teacher.

GBY’s Signature Program’s backstory:

Long ago in the 90’s, Sandy was approached by a student who had broken his wrist, if he could come to a hatha (movement yoga) yoga class and just lay there and absorb the wonderful energy. At that very moment she decided to create a class called “Gentlebody, Gentlemind”. It was placed in its own timeslot on Friday evenings. Anyone could come and be relaxed and just chill. As a graduate of yoga therapy, Sandy holds a range of knowledge that became quite helpful in using the right postures for various body concerns.

The class had a particular format and over time she had realized it was quite restoring which prompted her to  train under the Lasater program. But something was still missing.  A deeper approach to softening the nervous system was desired. This led her to train with Mazala – a woman from New Jersey in which Sandy drove down and spent a weekend (one-on-one) in training. This was the icing on the cake!

Between the two trainings and Sandy’s own experience and background, she created “Deeply Restorative Yoga“, also known as “Healing through Stillness” (for those that trained under Sandy and not a yoga teacher as she wanted this to be available to anyone!).

Before offering the annual training, and before charging the public – she did  over 100 private pro bono sessions to receive feedback and fine tuning. That became the most important factor of the whole creation.

MONTHLY: Our monthly 2.25 Hour Deeply Restorative/Healing Through Stillness is always listed in the newsletter and on the website. June 14th still has 2 spaces left. Requires pre-registration (no exceptions)

WEEKLY: These are not the signature program, but are very calming and soothing as well as easier on the budget.

  • Tuesday Evenings 5:15pm in Bloomfield (this will slightly change July 2nd – surprise to come!!)
  • Wednesday Evenings 7:00-8:15pm in  Bloomfield starts June 5th  (just walk in)
  • Friday Mornings 9:30-10:45am in Canandaigua (the last Friday of the month – just walk in)

Anyone who resonates with the Restorative benefits. Pose choice is very limited.  Injuries are not as easily handled as in a “regular class” as there are hundreds of poses to choose from in a Hatha yoga class. If you have ANY questions or concerns, just call or email.

Our next post will be about a new offering coming July 2
