The Yoga of Mastering the Mind
Raja Yoga is the path of systematic analysis and control of the mind. The goal is to control thought waves known as the chitta vrittis, and thus attain the super-conscious state of mind, the final goal.
The basic premise of Raja Yoga is that our perception of the divine Self is obscured by the disturbances of the mind. If the mind can be made still and pure, the Self will automatically, instantaneously, shine forth.
Raja yoga is synonymous with Meditation (yogic). Creating a seat within the body in which comfort is obtained so that one may dismiss the body to float further in (or out – depending how one wishes to view union). It asks that we purify the body and mind by embracing the 8 Limbs of Yoga (found in all yoga – but a systematic approach is used in Raja Yoga).
The first foundational step is the practice of Ahimsa – compassion for all beings. This would include a plant-based style of eating, since energy does not die and always lives on (thank you science for proving what yoga has always known!). We do not want to consume the fear and stresses found in diary and meat products. Otherwise, Meditation generally gets stuck in more of a concentration mode. Which is also nice! However, that absorption into meditation will modify your life forever. Even if it only happens one time.
A dedicated practice is recommended. Learn about Raja Yoga at one of our public meditation classes or take our 200 RYT Training for a deep dive with Sandy Hicks who began her Raja Yoga lifestyle with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1973.
