Reflections on the Yamas and Niyamas – Winter/Spring 2024.

The following weekly themes will inform our regularly scheduled practices beginning January 27 and running through April 3, 2024. 

YAMAS (restraints)

Week #1 (January 27-31):      Ahimsa (non-harming)

  • Practice: a heart opening and restorative practice. 

  • Reflection:  cultivate a sense of safety for self and others to promote compassion for all life.

Week #2 (February 3-7):        Satya (truthfulness)

  • Practice: “playing the edge” of the more challenging postures with special focus on alignment and the bidirectionality of postures.

  • Reflection:  seeking liberty from the pressure and dissonance of self-deception.

Week #3 (February 10-14):    Asteya (non-stealing)

  • Practice: a focus on our common through movement and pranayama.    

Week #4  (February 17-21):    Bramacharya (abstinence, moderation, continence)

  • Practice: blending effort with restfulness especially in balancing poses. 

  • Reflection:  seeking freedom from that which controls and limits us.

Week #5 (February 24-28):    Aparigraha (non-hoarding or non-grasping)

  • Practice: we will attend to our core strength and take strong standing poses with a focus on releasing unnecessary tensions.

  • Reflection:  seeking liberty from substitutes for sufficiency.

NIYAMAS (observances)

Week #6 (March 2-6):            Saucha (purity)

  • Practice: rigorous flows, with plenty of twists, followed by restorative postures. 

  • Reflection:  seeking liberty from unnecessary complexity.   

Week #7 (March 9-13):          Santosha (contentment)

  • Practice: an emphasis on the breath throughout the practice.

  • Reflection:  seeking liberty from comparisons and competition.   

Week #8 (March 16-20):        Tapas (austerity, discipline, internal fire)

  • Practice: a rigorous practice emphasizing precision and sustained holds.   

  • Reflection:  establishing disciplines and practices that support an unburdened life.

Week #9 (March 23-27):        Svadhyaya (study of self and sacred texts)

  • Practice: postures to support sitting and time allotted for meditation.

  • Reflection:  Becoming familiar with, and at home in, spaciousness.   

Week #10 (March 30 – April 3):   Ishvara pranidhana (devotion to the transcendent)

  • Practice: heart opening and surrendering postures along with longer held receptive poses. 

  • Reflection:  seeking the liberty inherent in service.
