My Story

Laurah completed her teachers training in 1997 (California) and advanced teachers training in 2000 (South India) in the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and continued her training in that school for more than two decades. Since that time, she has taught yoga in yoga centers and ashrams throughout North America and South India. From 1999 to 2003, she taught yoga practice and theory to dance majors and non-majors at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the Department of World Arts and Cultures. From 2003 to 2005, she taught yoga and creative movement to children at a preschool and downtown dance academy in New York City. In the intervening summers, she was director of a children’s yoga camp in California. Later, she shared her time between Syracuse, NY and Kerala and Tamil Nadu, South India, where she conducted years of language study and research in anthropology, while continuing to practice and teach yoga.

Introduced to yoga after years of study of dance (including the classical Indian dance, Bharata Natyam, as well as ballet, tap, and modern dance), Laurah brings a depth of anatomical knowledge to her practice. She also completed courses in Swedish and Ayurvedic massage. Laurah offers a simple practice, grounded in her training in Sivananda’s system of 12 basic asanas, with a focus on breath and longer held postures. She has taught a wide range of bodies – from athletes and dancers, to people with physical limitations or concerns, including obesity, old age, and prenatal yoga. Yoga is for everybody!

In addition to her yoga background, Laurah holds a PhD in cultural anthropology, with a specialty in South India. She teaches at Utica University in the areas of health anthropology, gender, globalization, and food and culture. Fluent in Tamil and Malayalam languages, she has spent many years living and working in South India. Her 2022 book, Transnational Yoga at Work: Spiritual Tourism and its Blind Spots is an ethnographic study of workers in the international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres in India.
