Yoga is far beyond the physical postures on the magazine cover. The discovery of Transcendental Meditation at 11 allowed Sandy to reinforce the ability to ‘just be’ and lead a peaceful, compassionate life. Hitch hiking to Omega Holistic Institute became her summer weekends and retreating at the Feathered Piped Ranch pulled Sandy into close and intimate teachings of Sri T. Krishnamacharya, RamDass, BKS Iyengar, Jack Kornfield, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Tara Brach, and Garmukh Kaur Khalsa. In the late 80’s and 90’s Sandy continued with extensive studying with Sri Dharma Mittra and Brahman Stapleton. So much soul and health in it all.
My young and old life is mainly the practice and path of Raja and Jnana Yoga. I hold respect for all lineages – they all have something wonderful to offer. There is a large amount of beauty and wisdom in expanding into so many lineages. I am grateful to teach what I live, and possess a deep care for my students and offering light on their path. Expect a class that comes from my heart. At times there will some challenge, some stillness, some gentleness, some inner soul, some wisdom of yogic philosophy & how it relates to our journey in life.
Advanced Yoga is offered by inquiry or invitation. This session meets twice per week with a focus on Dharana and Dhyana with use of the spinal breath, Bandhas, Pranayama. Each session is 75 minutes anchored with Satsang. (once per week in summer months)

After living in New York City for two and a half decades, I moved to the Finger Lakes region in 2005 where I could be near my mother. In New York, I earned an M. Div from Union Theological Seminary and worked with the chronically homeless, who were often mentally ill and addicted. I was first introduced to Yoga in 1998 during a period of intense personal transition and the practice has become a central aspect of my life ever since. After a couple of years of regular classes I began to take notice the power of the breath in my life off the mat – especially when confronted with the crisis situations so common in my work. The ability to breathe, observe without judgment, and resist reacting impulsively served me well in volatile environments.When I relocated upstate I had the opportunity to surrender to my love of Yoga and earned my 200 hour Kripalu certification. With my Kripalu certification and trainings with Sarah Powers in Yin Yoga, my offerings reach deeply into the body, mind and heart.

Luc never thought he would practice yoga. He wanted to be a psychotherapist since his teenage years but got bored in psychology classes. He did not know why at the time but Life led him to understand the kind of psychotherapist her wanted to be; it came unexpectedly through yoga. Life had to twist his arm first. It came through a friend who asked him if he would support her by joining her in a yoga class for people with back problems. It was an Iyengar style yoga class. Luc joined and attended the series of classes. At the time Luc did not know there were many styles of yoga. Shortly after that Luc moved to the Yoga Society of Rochester. At the time, it was an intentional community where teachers were invited to teach various styles of yoga. As a housemate Luc could take all the classes for free. He tried Kripalu, then Kundalini, and Ashtanga yoga. Luc fell in love with Kundalini Yoga as it made him feel blissful no matter what mood he was in at the beginning of classes. Luc started teaching after 6 months of taking classes and a year later took the teacher training. It was 1996. By an interesting coincidence,it was the first teacher training Yogi Bhajan offered and was called: The Master’s Touch.
Within the teachings of Kundalini Yoga, Luc studied a healing practice called Sat Nam Rasayan. It literally means “Resting into the truth.” He practiced this healing method after class with his students for free for awhole year. During a healing he would experience the way energy flowed in his students. He could give them feedback and ask questions. The conversations empowered students to new levels of awareness they could bring into their lives. That led Luc to his practice of Mindfulness Psychotherapy. Kundalini Yoga has a natural place in it for his clients who are willing. Luc later got a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. He seesthe future of psychotherapy including awareness and healing practices instead of diagnoses and treatment of illnesses. His clients’ most common comment after the first session is that they learned more in one session with Luc than in all the months or even years of therapy done in mainstream therapy.

I took my first yoga class 19 years ago in Alaska, it was a private session. I still can recall the the peace that the first class introduced me to. There was something big going on with this “yoga”. I didn’t know what it was, but i had to know more, my practice began. I did my first 200RYT in New Mexico about 12 years ago. I then returned to Alaska and opened a small studio in the bush{not connected to the road system, fly or boat only access} village I lived in. I wanted to share this gift of yoga with as many as possible. I have been back in New York for 8 years now and have attended classes often at Grounded by Yoga. I appreciate the dedication the teachers have there to the students and the practice itself. So i decided to do another 200RYT with Sandy Hicks this past winter{2015}. For me Yoga is a process it is always unfolding and teaching you something about yourself and the universe. My practice and learning about this tradition has spanned nearly 20 years and I know I have just scratched the surface. One of the greatest things about sharing yoga is seeing the “shift” the ahah moment, that one experiences with a regular practice. Everyone can do yoga and everyone can benefit from having a practice. I consider Yoga to be a gift, it is a gift we can all give to ourselves and I love being able to share this gift with others. When we learn to unite the mind, body, heart, and soul we walk through life with a lighter step and peace in our soul. Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. Kate

RYT 200 Grounded By Yoga Interdisciplinary Studies

I discovered yoga when a serious running injury forced me to the sidelines. During that time of healing and quiet reflection, I came to appreciate the sublime, powerful beauty of a yogic lifestyle. The more I studied, the more I felt called to this vocation. In 2015, I completed my RYT200 training under Sandy Hicks at Grounded By Yoga Studios & Teacher Training Center, where I currently lead gentle and beginner classes, in addition to meditation sessions. I am humbled and deeply honored to be a part of this ancient tradition. As my journey continues to unfold, I look forward to sharing the lessons I learn with others, and to learn from them, as well. Yoga gives me a sense of clarity and respect for my body’s strengths and limitations. I practice because, if I don’t, I’m even more reactive and distracted. It has given me the tools to slow down and experience the present moment. My very first savasana, I can remember lying there in the dark with the biggest, fullest smile plastered on my face. Knowing that I had just opened the door to something bigger, something more beautiful that I could have ever imagined. In that moment is where my love for yoga blossomed, and it is my great hope that I can bring that experience to even just one other person.

    My journey with yoga started through meditation.  A few years ago I became very interested in the connection of the mind, body, and soirit.  I would often go on long walks, or hikes, taking in the beautiful nature as I went, and stopping when I found a nice quiet place to sit.  Closing my eyes, and just feeling and listening to my breath flow in and out of my body, really brought my focus inward, and all distractions, whether they were physically around me, or just in my mind, started to fade away.  There was something so special and truly amazing about being with myself, and not having thoughts and chatter run through my mind – it was stillness.  This type of meditation was something I would do quite often, yet, I had no idea the door that was just opened, was going to lead me on a beautiful path and journey.
    In January of 2015, I was given an amazing opportunity to attend Sandy’s Grounded By Yoga Teacher Training.  I knew Yoga was something I definitely wanted to learn more about.  Not only was I captivated by peace and stillness that meditation had brought me, but I was also very interested in the different types of yoga, and wanted to learn more about Asana and Pranayama.  Throughout the training, I learned so much about myself, and this beautiful universe.  I had discovered this new sense of adventure and peace, at the same time.  This was only the beginning for me.  I knew I wanted to share this amazing feeling with others, and help them in different ways through the practice of Yoga.  ~ Namaste ~ Jackie
