Practicing yoga is both a physical endeavor and a personal journey for any student. Beginning yoga requires personal commitment as well as support and guidance. If you live with a disability, it is especially important to believe yoga is not only possible for you, but that you can experience its wonder and benefits just like anyone else
Why? I teach Yoga, a lot. And yoga and my students teach me, a lot. It's a beautiful endless journey. My yoga beginnings began as way to calm my "monkey mind" at a very young age. Intuitively, I also found myself in physical postures,I later realized were yoga asanas. From my own self healing from a near fatal car accident, I discovered the incredible physical benefits. For 22 years, the only Yoga I shared was therapeutic and adaptive Yoga. Yoga can spread through the landscape of our body and heal. I just want to share with you. ~ Sandy Hicks
For some, Yoga means perfecting that physical posture and going as deep as they can into their ego; pushing themselves; wanting; attaching to the outcome. My therapeutic and adaptive students may never find their selves in a headstand, full wheel or even mountain. Instead, they will learn something more valuable, accepting where there are, the power of breath, inner peace and the beauty of gentle movement.

The “Yoga Sutras of Patanjali,” yoga’s source text, is a detailed guidebook, a how-to manual for the focusing of awareness on a chosen object or in a chosen direction. According to the sutras, the systematic shift of attention inward should be correctly adapted for each individual and practiced with consistency, conviction and enthusiasm over the course of many years. Through regular practice, the curse of codependency and the spell of addiction can be broken. Whether it is through long-term sobriety (or kaivalya), freedom (or paramananda), or perpetual and long-enduring joy, we can ultimately break the cycle of codependency and addiction. This inner evolution offers the sweet taste of true self-awareness to recovering addicts and offers hope to future generations.
